points system

Working on 1966 Corvette. Keeps burning up points. I think there is too much voltage to coil. Has new resistor and wiring harness. Wiring diagram would help.Any ideas.

Re: points system

If the ballast resistor is in line and working correctly, you will "measure" about 8.5 V on the distributor "side". First place to check. Make sure the integrity of the coil's primary windings is "good", too.

If that's okay, the condensor is probably the culprit. Rule of "thumb": "If minus material on the minus side, the condensor is too small in capacity". That being said, I have no idea where one can get a different capacity (mF, "micro-Farads") condensor these days. Standard Ignition used to have a great selection. They may still.

M&H Electrical in SoCal may have wiring diagrams. Zip's Corvette Parts in Mechanicsville, Virginia, may also. A visit to the library? '66 Corvette "supplement" factory service manual...

Purist? Or would you consider changing to electronic? The Petronix "conversion" is excellent and uses the original distributor. Barely noticeable (extra wire).
