95 4.6 cooling problem????
Hi everyone I am a newbie here. So nice to meet all of you!
I am trying to help my stepson get his car going. His fan stopped working. Him and his dad tryied wiring the fan direct to the battery . He said it smoked out and melted their jumper wires. They gave up and said the fan was bad. I took over and 1st I made my own set of wires and tried the fan myself. both speeds worked. No problems no wire overheating. So next I plug it back in and we try it watching the guage on the inside to see when it is upto proper operating temp no fans come on. So after I read some archived posts on here I learned that there is a good chance that the temp sending unit might be bad. So while it is starting to get warm I unplugged the wire from the sender. The fan comes on first on low then it kicks up to high after 10 sec or so. Plug it back and it stops,. unplug comes back on. Did this several times. Conclusion is bad sender. Replace sender after getting the wrong one the first time, there are 2 of them. 1 for the gauge and 1 for the fan. It does the same thing plugged in dont work unplugged does work. So we check a little bit and it seems to be working ok, not overheating at all. So next day he goes 25 miles away and on the way back it starts to overheat. Checks under the hood and the fan aint working. Get it home and the fan is not working . I check it straight to the bat again, now I think the low speed is working but the high speed does nothing at all. I am pretty sure it is the low that works. but nothing will work when it is hooked in the car sys. My ??? are, does this sound normal when you unplug from sender for the fans to run?? Did I burn out the high speed by running it non stop??? Could the new sender be bad??? Is there a way to check it? Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated!!!! Thanks Steve |

Wow....demons in the elec.! Ok...no this does not sound normal. First is it an aftermarket fan? If so normally you have a thermometer in the radiator and that determines when it goes on. Second, I doubt you burned out the fan because that is what they are designed to do. What motor do you have? Do you have oil in the water or water in the oil? You might have a bigger problem such as a blown head gasket.

Re: 95 4.6 cooling problem????
Actually I figured it out. I determined the fan was definetly not good so I replaced it then tried it again and it still wasnt coming on. So I called a mechanic buddy of mine and he come over and checked it all out and said everything looked alright. So we tied it again and when it got up on the guage where I thouhgt it should come on and we shut it off. He wanted to wait just a little longer and sure enough it came on and everything seems ok now. I think the fan was working intermittantly. It definetly is fried and wont work at all.
Thanks for your help! Steve |
