93 geo handfull of questions
93 5speed 3 cyl 189,000 on it.
Does anyone know if there is a difference between a TB on a 5spd or an auto? Something seems wrong with mine. There is a black box on the left side of the TB that has a 4 prong plug but someone has made it a 3 prong plug to fit that black box, which I think is a TPS. The diagram for the vacume lines isn't very clear. There is a vacume line off the firewall with a little filter on it, where does it plug into the TB at? There are two lines but I am not sure which one. There is a hcvtvv something like that little vacume switch, that goes on the lower back side of the motor. It is not hooked up, is this important? How do I check the codes for this car? I have a check engine light that is on. If someone has any pictures or better diagrams please send them my way. I really need to get this thing running correctly. IF someone wouldn't mind taking some pics of there TB so I can compare that would be great. Thanks for any help you can offer. |

Re: 93 geo handfull of questions
The TB's should be the same, from an automatic to a stick. It's the ECM that will differ. If something has been modified, then your car may have a different year of throttle body on it.

ok, I heard different, a mechanic guy said there was a difference. I was seeking a second opinion. Thanks. I guess then I have the wrong throttle body. Does anyone have a pic of 93 TB?

Re: 93 geo handfull of questions
The TB itself is the same, but the TPS sensor (black box on left side as your looking at the engine from the front) is different. With the earlier metros the TPS was different between autos and 5-speeds. Everything else should be the same. The only TPS that was box shaped was on the 89-91 5-speed metro. I believe the later 5-speed metros (92 and up) the TPS was not boxed shaped. It was rounded on the bottom end like the automatic TPS. I am unsure as to 3 or 4 wires.
It is important that you get your vac hoses hooked up correctly and that your grounds are in place. There should be a ground wire on the bottom back side of the TB. The vac line with the filter is the MAP. This has to hooked up to the TB. Above the filter should be a rectangular box (map). I will see if I can't find some pics for you. |

Re: 93 geo handfull of questions
Tf your TPS is boxed shaped than your TB came from an earlier metro 5-speed.
Here is a pic from an 89 or 90 TPS 5-speed I don't think the newer tps will fit the older TB. I have both and will check it out. |

Re: 93 geo handfull of questions
Ok I have a NOS TB from a 90 metro 5-speed that I parted out for the FI.
Here you see a TPS from a 93 metro (numbers match what drbill posted-5-speed 93) IT WILL NOT FIT THE HOLE IN THE OLDER 1990 5-speed TB. So check your TB to see if it has that rod sticking out where the TPS mounts. You might be SOL. |

But these TB's are a dime a dozen. Someone on the forum might have one or you local yard might have one too.

Re: 93 geo handfull of questions
Thast is a good price, now make sure you clean that EGR ports (from the exhaust to the valve and from the valve to the TB) out before you install it.
You will thank yourself later! |

Re: 93 geo handfull of questions
how can you tell if you have a burnt valve? With the way everything is hooked up the car is using fuel very quickly and smokes a litltle black. What is the correct oil to use in these cars?

Re: 93 geo handfull of questions
If you already know about what follows, disregard it.....
If your '93 3 cyl 5 spd has 189,000 miles on it, the VERY FIRST THING I would do, now that I have had some experience with mine, would be to do a COMPRESSION CHECK. That one test will tell you whether, or not, you have burned valves - and which ones are burned! Then when done, add a shot glass full of fresh oil to each cylinder and repeat the test. The oil will seal up the rings momentarily and if you have bad rings (almost assuredly), the pressure will go up after the second test. The pressure of each cylinder (first test) should not vary from the others by more than 20% It should be up close to or above 180 PSI - if I remember - see the Chilton Manual (you should have one!). I bought a COMPRESSION TESTER GAUGE SET at Harbor Freight for $25. It was the screw in type - the push types are not so good if done wrong. They vary in price, but most automotive parts stores have them below $40. You can rent them at Equipment Rental places, but for about the same amount of money, you might as well buy it and then it is yours forever. Almost always, cylinder Number One (leftmost when looking from the front of the car) will have a burned exhaust valve. That was my experience. Tools almost always pay for themselves right away...Butt savers. If one of your valves is bad, then you need to take the Head off and have it serviced for around $250 - they put in new EXHAUST valves, etc. You can get Stainless Steel exhaust valves put in for a couple dollars more... if you want. I sent you my threads wherein I did all this and where I pulled the oil pan off and replaced my worn rings (oil burning) while the Head was being worked on. Those threads have pictures of everything I did as I did it. Now I have lots of POWER and get 48 mpg here in Spokane, WA at 2,200 ft altitude. It is like a new car! Back to a new engine... I now call my baby "The Phoenix" - since it rose from the ashes, as it were... DoctorBill

Re: 93 geo handfull of questions
The correct oil is 5W-30. Doc gives good advice, get the compression checked. At 189K, you almost certainly need a valve job.
