Exclamation Windows XP USB disconnecting...

I have a laptop (hp ze4125 AMD XP 1.4ghz 1gb ram) in my music room that I'm using strictly for recording. It was wiped and installed Media Center on it. I have a PCMCIA USB2.0 card installed. Everytime I tried to install drivers for any recorder, it either works and then fails, or just doesn't work.

For an Omega Lexicon, I was able to install it, but then the driver would disappear after 5 minutes each time. Common problem with it apparently.

M-Audio Duo the driver just wouldn't install. Installed software fine, but USB device was always unrecognized.

So I wiped the computer again last night and went to Windows XP Home. Now the lexicon won't even install the driver. Well it "installs it" but when I reset the computer, it's magically gone. The Duo just sits there "no driver".

I went into the device manager and went to USB Root Hub or whatever and turned off allow the computer to shut down device. Did nothing. Then I over heated it because I set the processor speed to full and I got pissed.

I've had the same exact problems on my other laptop too (hp zd series p4 3.4ghz HT 2gb ram). Any ideas on what's going on here? I've used the newest drivers for both units, even older ones and still no luck. It's getting me angry and I'm ready to sell all this recording gear. Oh and when I look up the driver in some driver program I have, it says working fine, although device manager says unrecognized USB device. HELP!
