for your viewing pleasure...MR gearing

Ok, I know not all of you frequent 3si, and that the JDM* gearing has been a topic of interest for a few...after reading these threads I realized it is alot more plausible than I had originally anticipated. As far as I know, it can only be done on the 6spds, but all you need to do is get ahold of a 5spd rear and the front differential JDM* ring and pinion gears (through Kormex) All in all, they say if you can drop a tranny on your own, and are comfortable with working on one, that you can do this for around $300...the advantage being:

1) The MR runs 12.8ish in the 1/4 stock...it's only differences are the gearing and some weight savings...so the gearing contributes almost a half second difference in ETs.

2) For those with higher trapping cars, who need to shift into 4th near the end of the 1/4, this shorter gearing allows you to get more 'ummphh' out of 4th, so that it is a help, not a hindrance.

Here are the threads:

http://www.3si.org/forum/showthread.php?t=259907 (another report w/ pics from a guy who just completed the swap)

http://www.3si.org/forum/showthread.php?t=259782 (report from a guy who did it)

http://www.3si.org/forum/showthread.php?t=227694 (40 page 'official' thread on the subject)

Just wanted to share, as it offers another option to those whose who have/will have issues with shifting into 4th in the 1/4, rather than retuning your ECU to 8k rpms.

Re: for your viewing pleasure...MR gearing

Quite possibly...It's sad, but I really think the FAQ already needs an overhaul...I reread it recently, and felt SOOO much is missing. I just find there is such a wealth of information on 3si, because of it's larger membership of 3/S owners. I mean there are so many topics that are discussed there, that are barely even mentioned over here.
I'm not bashing AF, I feel we have a sense of community that is pretty much lacking on 3si, but I enjoy reading about the different paths others are taking, whereas here, it seems the 'average' is stock-BPU and presently, many of us are on the same 'beaten path'. Obviously, there is nothing wrong with keeping our cars (nearly) stock, quite a few enthusiasts here have no desire to run 11s, and that's perfectly fine.
But the aftermarket advances of our platform are an element of the 3/S community, and therefore it's just something I really would like to see more information about in here, so by adding more to the FAQ, perhaps that will help bring about that change.

I appreiciate your threads about advances of the platform you find on 3SI, I usually don't have the patience to read through it all lol.

Re: for your viewing pleasure...MR gearing

How many times do I have to say it, its not MR gearing, its JDM gearing. Every 94+ GTO TT had the same gearing, weather it be a MR or a standard TT. Its the USDM 6 speed trans and xcase and the 5 speed rear diff. You swap in the JDM ring and pinion gear into the trans and you have yourself JDM 6 speed gearing.

So why did no one listen before? Maybe because I didnt link to 3si......................

Re: for your viewing pleasure...MR gearing

Sorry, I knew it was JDM, just assumed MR and JDM would be interchangable...my apologies.

I thawt the GTO ran low 13's?

If the GTO runs low 13's and the MR runs 12.8, where does the rest of the difference come from then if they have the same gearing? surely the weight difference isnt that big.

im confused.

Re: for your viewing pleasure...JDM gearing

the GTO MR is basically the same thing as the vr4 but it's about 120 pounds lighter, and has shorter gearing than the vr4, so both of those combined account for the 12.8 instead of 13.4 time.

Re: for your viewing pleasure...JDM gearing

The GTO's times vary just as the VR4's times very. The gearing difference is only in the 2nd gen models. The 1st gens had the same gearing. The GTO TT has been known to run 12's also.

OK. So here you say that all 94+ GTO's have the same gearing but then in that last post you said that vr4s had different gearing. I was always under the impression that the GTO TT's were the same as your 3000gts?

The reason im interested is that i may have th opportunity to import a GTO in from japan and im trying to decide if i want to get the MR or the Standard GTO TT.

Thanx.

Re: for your viewing pleasure...JDM gearing

The GTO TT and the VR4 are the same car except for RHD vs LHD and the gearing. But all 94+ JDM cars had the lower gearing. USDM cars and I believe the general export cars had the same gearing.

The MR is a stripped down GTO TT(Z16A Chassis). Basicly a base model GTO(Z15A chassis) with a TT drivetrain.
