2000 Jetta TDI Stalls at Operating Tempurature in Colder Weather
Hi all, I have a 2000 Jetta TDI 5 speed manual- That stalls after reaching operating tempurature in colder weather- Any Idea's ?
Location: New Jersey Time Period: December 2004 Fuel: Hess, with some Kero mixed in since temp dropped below 20F. Have also used a diesel winter conditioner in the fuel.(this has worked in my diesels for 20 years, including a Sirroco that I converted to diesel. Car has been running just fine. On one trip of several hundered miles, headed up a long grade , in the fast lane- 80-85mph car power dropped off, the more I stepped on the go peddle the slower it went- managed to get to the right hand lane and pull over- the engine stalled would not restart for about 20minutes to a half hour after cooling off. Managed to make it back to NJ with numerous stops to let it cool off on the side of the road. Found on one day after weather warmed up a bit it no longer stalled at operating temp but kept running. Car has about 65K on it. The Dealer is telling me it may timing related. HUH? WHAT? this is why I ask here- diesel fundimentals = turn off fuel and turn off the diesel. Timing would make run bad all the time- this car goes and goes and goes until in colder weather when it gets to operating temp. |

Re: 2000 Jetta TDI Stalls at Operating Tempurature in Colder Weather
Well, it may actually be a timing problem. My car recently had something similar after the water pump was replaced (meaning they had to strip all the belts). The car hesitated when you tried to push it beyond 3500 revs. It was solved by retiming it, but now when it's cold the hesitation's there until the engine warms up. You may have yours timed on just the opposite side of perfect.
Alternately, it may be a mixture problem, or something with the throttle. I wouldn't know as much about that, but I know I had to turn my car's idle revs up with the cold weather. |
