$$ for b16a swap?

I got a quote today for a complete professional swap, around $3k.

JDM b16a engine, cable tranny, ecu, mounts, axles, shift linkage, etc...

Cost includes labor and 1-year warranty. Engine is tested for compression, etc., comes from a clip so the actual mileage is known (under 50k)... plus whatever JDM parts left on the clip are mine (instrument cluster, parts off the dash, etc...), which I can sell on ebay to offset the cost.

Is this a fair price? Considering this is my daily driver, I would rather have it done right by someone who knows what they're doing. The mechanic comes recommended from a friend, even took the time to show me around the shop...

You should be able to get the motor for around $1200. I have a friend who can get them for $1600 complete with mounts from HASport and EVERYTHING included. I guess the labor could be over a $1000. I dont know man. it sounds like a good price. I've always done the swaps myself so i wouldnt know.

Yeah, I know I can get it done for less... if I had another car to drive, I might go the cheaper route. Since I'll be driving this car everyday for work and school, the peace of mind is probably worth the money...

They told me around $1400 for the clip... some of the clips they had at the shop were pretty intact.. one even had the steering wheel... (or is this common?)

It just sounds better... most places say their engines are low miles, but how do you really know unless the speedo is included?

That was the impression I got... $1400 for the engine, tranny, ecu, instrument cluster, etc... all contained in the front clip.

I can find out where its coming from if you're interested...

Do front clips typically include the dashboard?

Well, my smog is due in April. I'll get it done now before I do the swap and I'm good for 2 more years...

I've been told that JDM engines can pass CA smog... any CA B16A owners care to comment on this?

I know there are other ways to pass the test...

Well as far as i know about wat includes the front clip is...the hood, lights...

Yeah, but I think a lot of that stuff is either taken off and too damaged to be worth much... most of these cars were in accidents, right? No engine damage but the body itself is "beyond repair"...

They showed me around the shop, I don't recall seeing hoods on the clips, but most were from MR2s... he also told me about a RHD CRX they had in a few months ago. SWEET!

What exactly are you looking for from the clip? I'm talking to him again tomorrow, I'll ask about what exactly is included.

Yeh i would like to know where its from?

I just called the shop... here's what they say about clips:

Instrument cluster - definitely included. These are selling for $150 on ebay, so the $1400 isn't such a bad deal!

Other parts (bumper, hood, etc) - maybe 50% of the clips still have this stuff attached. Depends on what kind of accident the car was in, and how they decide to ship it. If the car was in a front end collison, you aren't gonna get much. I'll let you know what I end up with...

I've also heard of B16A's being shipped with aftermarket parts still attached. I think I'd rather have a stock engine and do the upgrades myself...

btw, checked for you on shipping to Chicago, IL - $1400 for the clip, $400 for s/h (+$45 if residential).

Yeah, about the parts bolted on, it really depends on how the company that is selling you the engine GOT the engine. If it was a wreck they might just ship all the still functioning stuff attached to it. Heck, they might ship some broken stuff too. Really depends. I think 3 grand for a COMPLETE swap WITH that warranty (very worth it) is a good price. Labor can be a lot, especially on a swap. I think average labor cost is like 70 bucks an hour or something like that. I think a B16A swap does meet smog requirements (at least in Idaho) so you MIGHT be okay. For the B16 on a USDM exhaust system it can't be that much of an increase. The really smoggy japanese cars are the Evo 7s and the like, higher horse power engines. You MIGHT be okay, but that's just my view. I think the USDM exhaust system should keep you legal.
