Cat-back loosening???

well...i was thinking about my exhaust and i had a question.

does anyone have problems with the exhaust loosening from the mid-section on their n/a z32?

reason: about once a month i have to crawl up under my car and re-tighten all 4 bolts that connect the cat-back to the mid section. all 4 bolts get pretty loose and everything starts rattling really bad. anybody have an idea of why this is happening?

Just old wore out parts from the sounds of it. Replace the nuts if you can find some with the same size and thread. Also, put some locktite on the threads next time you tighten it up. If you really just don't want to deal with it just have it welded together.

You can break a nut with Locktite on it loose, just takes more effort, which is kind of the point. A couple bucks of new bolts should work. If its still somehow coming loose after that then perhaps you should look into how its getting thrown around so bad that it keeps coming loose.

i was thinking that maybe my cats were clogged just a little. just enough where it wasnt releasing the exhaust as fast as it needs to so it is building up pressure in the pipes. kind of having a pushing effect on the rest of the exhaust. i dont know if that makes any sense. but it was a thought.

It would take a hell of alot of backpressure to do that, and if you had that much backpressure, you'd probably just stall the engine. More likely its just that the bolts are worn from being jerked around and coming loose then retightened. Might want to check how the cat-back is fitted in there, if its not fully supported on all the mounting points then it may be putting more pressure on the bolts, making them support more of the weight of the cat-back then they should be.
