Highway driving issues with a '95 manual trans

It almost only happens on the expressway at high speeds. Basically, out of nowhere the car will start making a very loud, rubbing noise (I guess, hard to describe). Sounds like a belt fell off a gear and was just spinning wildly. The car won't accelerate much after this happens, and hitting the gas makes the noise get worse.

Pulling over and turning the car off for a few minutes, then back on, and it stays fine for awhile. However, before turning the car off, I can still feel a strange vibration in the car, but it's not making any crazy noise.

Any ideas on what is causing this?

can't really diagnose with your description... the noise could be anything.... but anyways check your belting... timing belt that is.... and also check your top dead sensor...
