b16a/b vs b18b/c vs h22/23 vs b20 FAQ

Considering this is a HUGE debate that is asked frequently on this part of the forums, here's a sticky.

Feel free to say your opinion but please only put out factual information (not just info you "heard.")

I'll keep this open as long as ppl keep it civil and voice their opinions without flaming.

Hope this helps.

K20a3

Is the K20A3 the best engine that will fit in a 97 civic ex. Does it have the most HP/Torque?

Re: b16a/b vs b18b/c vs h22/23 vs b20 FAQ

no, probably the most hp your looking at for an engine that would drop into a 97 ex would be a b18c5 (integra type R). its roughly pushing about 210 hp and 127 ft/lbs. where as the k20a3 can be found in the newer si's. They have the same horsepower and the 99-00 si's but they bumped up the torque to around 137 i believe. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe I'm pretty dead on for those engines. The k20a3 can be found in the rsx and new body civic si's but the engien design and placement is much different then how honda usually places thier engines. It's "backwards", the intake manifold is facing the front bumper rather than the back. They do make kits to install it but its still probably pretty expencive and its still pretty new technology. Where as the Integra type R engine is a B serioes adn parts for the instal are much easier to find.

It also just came to my mind that I forgot the f20c (00+ S2000) it has around 240 horsepower. I'm not too sur eon the torque specs. But the redline is sky high if you get a 00 - 02. It sits a 9 grand. The newer F20's 03 and up, I believe, have lowered the redline to and changed it up a bit to give the engien slightly more torque. I dont know how well this would fit into a 97 civic seeing as how its rear wheel drive. but with a little bit of research I bet you could find out if its possible.

Hopefully that helps you out a bit, feel free to correct me on anything if I'm wrong. (aside from spelling .. I'm just way to lazy to spell check that thing)

Re: b16a/b vs b18b/c vs h22/23 vs b20 FAQ

I need help please?!?!?!?! I was broke and needed a car so I bought a 2001 Civic DX but now Im finding that there are no mods for the B17A1 motor besides cold air ground wires and exhaust. I need to do a motor swap and I was thinking about just stepping up to the EX engine B17a2 because there are plenty of mods for that. Am I wasting my time for minimal gains? What other engines will fit my car with minimal modifications? Has anyone found or does anyone have an instruction manual of sorts for the type of swap out I am going for? Please help me! Oh yeah by the way, Im still poor so cost effectivness is a big issue!

you have a d17a not a b17a, those were in integras. the best move would be to swap upto either the d16y8 sohc vtec or a ZC motor for little modification problems.

Re: b16a/b vs b18b/c vs h22/23 vs b20 FAQ

i'm doing an engine swap into my 94 honda civic and can't decide which engine I should go with the b16a2 or b18b1 -- the b16a2 has more base hp so why are the b18b1's more expensive?? any help would be great

Re: b16a/b vs b18b/c vs h22/23 vs b20 FAQ

actually I'm not too sure why the b18b1 would be more expencive. I can think a couple things why but I'm not too sure if those are the reason. the b18b1 has more torque and alot of people like the higher dispalcement. There may be slightly more of a market for them because it is possible to upgrade the head on them and make ls/vtec. I personaly like high reving engines that produce alot of top end because I personaly live by the fact that 4 bangers were never ment to put out alot of torque. If more torque was what you wanted then just get some fat ass v8 and reak havoc on all the little ricers.

If it were me I'd get the b16a .. not the USDM b16a2. because you get a little more added hp (168 rather than 160)

Re: b16a/b vs b18b/c vs h22/23 vs b20 FAQ

I hope I am posting in the right area, but I am soon to be purchasing a 1990 Honda Civic DX 4dr for $100 bucks from a co-worker. Its a Standard transmission.

I believe it has the D15 in it. I am new to this,a nd I briefly read up on doing a ZC swap from an older integra. is this the best way and most common way to go? I want the best bang for the bucks. I saw a few 1.6L ZC's(DOHC) on nippon-motors website, and they were asking about 645 for the engine and tranny together. would this be the best route to go??

thanks for all the help guys, I appreciate it. this is going to be the car I learn to tune on.

Re: Re: b16a/b vs b18b/c vs h22/23 vs b20 FAQ
