Check for codes without a code reader?

Hey all, newly registered user...

A guy at work found info on the net to figure out how to get his 98 durango to tell him the codes in his digital odometer.

I have a 98 grand marquis and my check engine light just came on. I drive about 150 miles a day round trip to work... I know, I know, I'm an idiot.

I don't mind the drive, especially since I got the merq.

I was just wondering if there's a way to get the error code without taking it to a dealer. The car has about 44K on it, I bought it in november with 25K on it. Relatively loaded with the digital instrument panel. The mild green haze got kind of old, but it's still nice none the less. I run 89octane and change the oil every 2500 miles. I use valvoline 10w30 and run valvoline injector cleaner about once every oil change.

I haven't noticed any loss in performance or milage. Nor have I noticed anything unusual, other than the light. The only wierd thing is today, there were about 40mph winds that I was driving in (@75mph) when it came on. My check engine light in a 96 ford contour would come on whenever it was really windy out and maybe this is the same?

Any info on how to get the codes out would be appreciated.

I agree, the Grand Marq's are sweet rides!!!! I've owned an 84, and now a 93. Sweet rides.

One quick question. Does your Marq, have a Digital Speedometer?

I picked up a Code Reader from Schucks Auto the other day, and used it last night. LCD display. It was about $35.00. It picked up a 332 code that I am having a problem with.

Since yours is a 98, then a little different code reader may be required.
Just check with them and they should have to one for your year.


I get Check Engine light on after about 20 minutes of driving. The code suggests that there is a restricted flow.

Yes, it does have the digital dash. It would be better if it wasn't flourescant green, but what can you do. I only wish it had a tach, but I guess it is an "old man" car.

I checked at my local farm and fleet for a code reader this weekend. They have one that around $40, but it only works for cars older than 90. The one that would work for my car is $150. Figures.

Did you check your air filter? Maybe it's dirty.
