Eagle Talon Shifting Problems 1st gone 2nd gone 3rd 4th 5th ok ???
My friend has a 96 eagle talon or eclipse...whatever...we were in a field and it was wet i put it in first gear...revved it up high, dumped the clutch and floored it...a standard hard launch...it spun up to 7 grand then i shifted to second...it wouldnt go in at all...it just grinded...the clutch pedal was to the floor...i tried one more time...no second gear...i put it in neutral...tried for first gear again...NOTHING...third gear, fourth and fifth are fine...first and second are both gone...NOW...before this all happened...the clutch had been having problems anyways...the whole car was shaking...I think he blew a motor mount and he has a miss...but whenever he would shift there would be a loud sound like a quick grinding clanking sort of sound like something was spinning...i could tell that the release bearing or throwout bearing wasn't right...and it felt like the flywheel was kind of messed up...it shakes in neutral even...he messed it up...but recently it had all gone away...no noise...the clutch grabbed fine...still shaking though...then the launch i told you about did something...what could it be...i was thinking the synchros could be off for first and second...NOW it wont shift up to first at all (not even grinding) and second will grind and sometimes go in with the right rpm...am i close or far off?

it does sound like u messed up a syncro, a freind of mine has a integra, and it did the same thing, we dook it apart, and the syncro was off alined, and chewed up, so, i would say, rebuild, or have a professional do it, also, what the hell posesed u to do a hard launch on a wet field??
i am not trying to mean, because i have done it too, lol Last edited by boots03; 08-20-2003 at 12:40 PM. |

I agree. It sounds like you have a messed up syncro. Take it in and have someone look at it just in case the throwout bearing is gone as well. It sounds like he should just get a full rebuild on that transaxle or just get a new one all together.

1st and second share the same hub/slider and shift fork. So its entirely posible that they would get mess up in that pairing.

Mine did the same except reverse didnt work either and i know the clutch had been going someone told me it was probly just the clutch. now today i was going to replace the clutch and decided that wasnt such a good idea to do by myself. any ideas? tranny clutch? which one? i sure as hell dont know..you can put the shifter into the gears 3rd 4th and 5th grind but go in...first second and reverse slide right in but you hear something spinning like metal barely touching metal?

Re: Eagle Talon Shifting Problems 1st gone 2nd gone 3rd 4th 5th ok ???
Mine did the same thing 1,2,and reverse worked 3,4,and5 grind. the reason it broke is the fifth gear sincro keys and sinch springs flew out, and put a whole in the rear cover. It ran out of oil and 3,and4 went. cost me about $150 to buy the parts to fix 5.now 3,and 4 still dont work ran out of time to keep fixing for now but, I plan on replacing 1,2,3,4, sincros each sincro assembly cost about $150 and there are 3 in all. I found that manual transmissions arent that hard to fix your self. You need a good diagram and some common sense. oh yea before trying to take off bell housing. take off the rear cover and un bolt the gears and take apart remember where every thing goes. there is a metal sleve on the input shaft that has to be removed before the bellhousing. it should be smooth sailing from there just remember where everything goes good luck if anyone trys this.

heat the sleve and use a screw driver to pry off dont damage the sleve and be carful not to hurt the bearing that is right under it
