2007 Focus wagon SE info input

I need some help deciding if I should get a 2007 Focus wagon with 5 spd to replace my venerable 1996 Escort wagon that is showing its age and mileage. Would appreciate information on common issues I should be aware of, and what to look for when actually checking out the Focus. I know and have experienced most of the blown head gaskets, dropped valve seats, rear shock breakage and various other Escort "quirks"after more than 10 years and a couple vehicles. The Escorts fit me well, and have gotten as high as 38mpg though is now in low 30s. Looking for mileage in same upper range, maneuverability, high visibility of driving area and great carrying capability. It will be a tow vehicle for RV travels.
