whining noise 2005 trailblazer

I have this whining noise that almost goes away when its warm out or when the car warms up and louder when its cold. Its even louder when i have it in 4wd,
it sounds like i'm beating on the thing. I went to get a sticker and the tech told
me its a transmission issue but it is shifting ok and otherwise working well. Its just has that noise. They could dig into it but he advised to just leave it alone.
Is it worth fixing or should I just trade it? I don't want to be stranded somewhere. It has been a good vehicle, been very happy. However it is alittle long in the tooth, 2005(going on 13 years old with 157000 miles on it. Thanks for any input anybody has.

My 2003 TB whined like a welfare addict about to lose benefits.

Replaced the power steering fluid with GM Cold Climate PS fluid. End of problem. Took two quarts to flush the original fluid out.

END trade with Communist China.

Hard to really help, without knowing the source of the noise....

Schurkey gave you a possibility.......
