rod knock or not?
i have fixed many parts on my Pontiac Grand am. and 2 days ago i was driving home on the express way. i was driving about 80-85. my car is a 1991 with a 2.5 ingine. it has about 142,000 miles on it.
On my way back home i heard a chattering in my enigine so i went right home. i could not find where the sound was coming from so i jacked my car up and heard it from inside my oil pan. it has a very terrible vibration on it and it is getting worse. there is no oil left now for some reason and all over around the pan. i put oil in before i left so i know it was full but not now. What is the problem?? all i know is it is loud fast pased tapping, chatter sound. is it a rod knock or what? |

a 1991 grand am with 142K miles on it probably shouldnt be driven that fast anymore.what ever it is giving you the problem was probably already worn out and driving the car at that speed probably made it worse and warped it.my first car was a grand am and i also had a knocking like that and the mechanic said it was in the crank shaft.but im not sure if thats the problem with yours.

Trying pulling the plugs one at a time while its running. Be careful not to get shocked when doing this. If the knock quiets down, then you've got a bad rod. I know this works on v8's but I'm not sure if it does on the smaller engines.
