front axle shaft housing cracked
2004 Yukon XL Denali tank. AWD, 6.0L, front drive unit, passenger side. The housing is cracked as far as we can see around. Obviously, the fluid leaks out. Local GMC dealer says $114 plus labor.
Have any of you had this happen?? How? What kind of force does this take?? What else shoul I look to replace if this has taken such a blow?

Re: front axle shaft housing cracked
That looks like it was stressed for sure, does the axle look new? Make sure it runs true and/or is not bound up.

Re: front axle shaft housing cracked
I haven't taken anything apart yet....thought I'd order a new housing first but maybe I should wait to see if anything else needs replacing. Any seals that you know of?
Funny thing is, I couldn't tell there was anything wrong after driving it twice. The whole truck was quiet and held the road properly as far as I could tell. I wouldn't have known there was any problem if I hadn't had the oil/lube done and the tech refilled the diff case. Of course, when filled it leaked out on my driveway. Thank God I didn't try to head out on a trip or up to the mountains.

Re: front axle shaft housing cracked
Just had it picked up and taken to Dan's Driveline. The more I looked at the assembly, the more it looked like a pro job and not a DIY garage job. So much for a "cheap" fix...but I know I'll get it back done right.

Re: front axle shaft housing cracked
Well, the verdict is that the axcle tube obviously needs replacing...and the pinion bearings. Who knows how long this was driven like this with low oil in it.
Anyway, another $675 bill for a front drive unit gone bad. I had to have the bearings and seals, etc. replaced on my 2005 Suburban (again with the AWD). My conclusion at this point is that GM's front drive units -- at least the ones used for AWD -- are not made of very good materials and will fail without a lot of miles on them. Nice job, GM. NOT!
