High idle after fast shift.

So this problem has been happening for awhile now, I have a 96 3cyl 5 spd geo metro 104,000 miles. When I am driving if I shift up to fast (don't let off the gas for a few seconds before releasing the clutch) or when I rev the engine to high in a lower gear the engine will rev at around 7000 rpm and stay there until i pull over the car, stop the engine and pump the the clutch pedal and gas pedal a few times simultaneously. It is a very frustrating problem and has been happening more frequently as of late. Any ideas what could cause this or where to start? Thanks.
