1996 V6 power steering pump pulley

I had to replace the power steering pump pulley because it broke. My question, because I had left the new pump and pulley aside for a few weeks and forgot is: Which part of the pulley faces the pump? The concaved side or the flat side? Anyone have a close up of the pump installed. I had a very hard time pressing the pulley on and I think it's on bacwards now.

You had to use a puller to get it off right? That puller had to grab something to pull it off. The part it grabbed should face out.

There was nothing left of the original pulley. About an inch of the center diameter was broke and missing, and only a very small piece was left on the shaft. Very difficult to remove. I replaced the whole pump and pulley, and unfortunately have installed it on backwards. Any ideas on how to get the pulley off without breaking it or the pump?

machine shop? They will have a bearing splitter or something that than can support the majority of the pulley while pressing the shaft out of it. That would probably be your best bet. Call round it may be cheaper to just sacrifice another pulley than having the one you have on backwards pressed off.

Another question, should a remanufactured pump have any play in the shaft at all. I did not hit the shaft or pulley with a hammer, but putting the pulley on backwards did take significant effort with my universal install tool, I had to use an impact and hold the pulley very tight. The shaft has some play in and out, not much. I don't recall if this is how it was out of the box or not. Neither the pump or the pulley come with the "enclosed install tool" like the included instructions mention, and advanced says they no longer cone with them, even showed me other boxes

I think they do normally have some end play on the shaft. I'm not sure how much is idea but they all seem to have some play.
