Front end shakes.

My daughter has a 1996 Grand Voyager that she would like to sell. However, right now when you drive it the front end shakes horribly like the wheels are coming off. I mean the whole dash is shaking. Scary! In addition, I swear I've seen the front wheels appear to wobble when she's driving it. Ive changed the wheel bearing on the passenger side and was astonished to find that it made no difference. I was wondering about the half shafts and CV joints and such. How can I tell if these are bad? I've grabbed them and tried to move them and they don't move. Thanks.

Re: Front end shakes.

Have you rotated the tires front to back?

Re: Front end shakes.

Have you checked the tires themselves for tread seperation...a lump in a tire wiill cause problems like you describe.

Have you double checked the lug nuts for the tires. Making sure they are all there and tight is a good place to start too.

Have you ever replaced the Sway Bar bushings and or the sway bar links, The bushings on these vans are notorious for wearing..a lot of us are on our 3rd or 4th set..If the sway bar doesn't stay in place..it can't keep the struts in position,,causing excess slop in the suspension. If the links are sloppy (the ball joint ends loose) that can be a problem too.

How about your strut towers are they intact and not rusted out If the mounting surface of the strut tower has rusted out..the struts may not be held in place properly. Some of these vans had problems with rust in this area.

How about the ball joints on the lower control arms?

I guess I would jack up the front end on jack stands and check each front wheel for any slop. There should not be any slop in the wheel when you grab it left & right and try to shake it or Top and bottom You should not feel or see any motion. While you have the wheels up in the air it's a good time to manually rotate each tire and look for any problems with the tires. Then you can start the van with both of the front tires off of the ground put it in Drive and watch the wheels turn..that migh help you spot something out or whack.

good luck let us know what you find...
