Flashing 4WD light on dashboard

Just recently, when I shift from 2WD into 4WD, the 4WD light on the dashboard flashes all during the time I am in 4WD. Can anyone advise me on what this may be caused by? I searched and saw a message that some contacts may be dirty, but it didn't say which contacts. I also saw a message indicating a module may be going bad. Any advice would be welcomed. My e-mail addess is howardhouk@comcast.net. Thanks!

I'm asking around now and I'll tell you anything I hear.

I personally thing that it's not keeping air presure in the differencial so the pump keeps coming on, making it flash an error warning. I'd get it checked out.

Well I got one reply for you when I asked...

The contacts are in the Transfer Case and there is no
module in a zuke, as it's a hand and
the lever. that or a bad bulb in the cluster.

Here is anouther answer...

The front dif may not be "locking in" if you have shift-on-flly. To find out drive in 4wd and get light to blink then jack the front of car up (one side will do). Then try to spin the tire by hand if you can the front dif is "not locking in"

And another answer....

George is correct. The four wheel drive isn't locking in properly. There is a diaphram in the differential that is probably leaking vacuum. That vacuum is needed to engage the auto hubs. I had the same problem on my 00 Grand Vitara. I was lucky enough to have it happen during warranty, even though it was the last time I owned it bewcause after visiting the Dealer for problem 11 times in 8 months Suzuki bought it back from me and I bought an XL-7. Haven't had any problems since then.

Re: Flashing 4WD light on dashboard

OK, I'm digging up this old thread as I am recently experiencing the same problem. I will add that my 4wd has been working fine with the exception that my 4wd would blink, but only occasionally. I just figured it was the bulb getting ready burn out as it would just blink once or twice very rarely. Anyhow, the other night I figured I shift into 4wd to make sure everything was in working order for winter and no 4wd. No 4wd light and I could tell it wasn't in 4wd.

Today I went right to the vaccuum motor behind the bumper. Right off the bat I noticed one of the wires for the connector was broken. I took the motor off and cleaned everything up. I had to take the connector apart and remove one of the pins to re-attach the broken wire. Put everything back together and hooked the motor back up. Tried the 4wd and and it engages, but the light blinks quite constantly. I listened to the vaccuum motor and can hear it coming on and off constantly (same as the light). When in 4wd is the motor supposed to turn on and off constantly, or does it only turn on to engage the front diff and then stay off? I took it for a spin and can feel the front diff grabbing, so it's in 4wd. To confirm this I jacked the truck up with it in 4wd and tried to spin the front tires by hand. It's definitely in 4wd.

I'm thinking I may have a vaccuum leak, but can't seem to find any hoses that look bad. I've read about the hose for the front diff. Is this the hose that is clamped onto the cross member right in the middle. It looks to be in good condition if so. Also, the dirty connector on the transfer case, where is it located? Hoping to track the problem because that blinking 4wd will be really annoying over the winter months.
