99 Sierra gear indicator in instrument cluster

The gear shift indicator (it may be vacuum fluorescent) lights intermittently.
I suspect a cold solder or poor connection but can't locate it. I've removed the cluster but can't get to the gear shift display section. I'm afraid to break something trying to separate the main circuit board from the gear display section. The odometer display is also part of this section. I can get the display to light by jarring the top or bottom the the dash board but think I'll break something if I keep doing this. Any ideas/help appreciated.
Thanks,
C5Z06
