Unhappy Failing emissions 2005 Ford Taurus HELP!

Wondering if someone could give me some advice- I just found out that I have failed emissions. I have a 2005 Ford Taurus and the codes that I have coming up are as follows:
PO171 Bank 1 system too lean
PO174 Bank 2 system too lean
PO300 Random/multiple misfire detected
PO301-PO306 Cylinder misfire
PO420 Cat Effic below threshold

Yea, it's alot- lol So, I'm not sure what to do as far as making the best decision financially to get these problems resolved. The mechanic said I should start with replacing all of the plugs and wires (estimate:$240) and that could knock out some of those codes. If it doesn't though, I have no idea what I'm looking at as far as costs to continuing. Does anyone have any advice for me? How should I go about this dilemma? Getting rid of the car isn't an option, unfortunately. Any advice for a lil stupid girl such as myself would be appreciated. lol Jennifer

Re: Failing emissions 2005 Ford Taurus HELP!

I would start with the 1st thread in this forum!
Search forum tool '''P0171 and P0174''

How many miles are on this car?
How long have you driving this car with the Check Engine Light (CEL) on?

The PCV system is probably leaking unmetered air into your Inake, causing your codes.

Re: Failing emissions 2005 Ford Taurus HELP!

There's a plastic tube, and a rubber garmet going from the top of your engine to the air duct work to the intake.

If there's any vaccum leaks from the Air filter, PCV tube, Air duct work, could cause this problem.
Can you hear a sucking, or a vacuum leak sound with the hood up + engine running?
How long were you driving this car with the CEL on?
A 2005 with 90K sounds like savatage!
Did you have the oil change, or any other kind of service done lately?

A good mechanic would do this test to help pinpoint the problem.

Re: Failing emissions 2005 Ford Taurus HELP!

Welcome to the forum!

I'd agree that you likely have unmetered air entering the system after the Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor. Start by checking the PCV elbow and intake air tubing for collapse or splits.

Did you really have stored codes for P0300 AND P0301 through P0306? That is pretty unusual.

Try the "Search this forum" feature from the upper right of the Taurus main page for keyword "P0171" without the quotes. You should find a lot of information regarding the P0171 and P0174 codes. Start by fixing them and the other codes will likely go away. There is also a "Sticky" on the Taurus forum main page as well for the P017x codes. The sticky thread even has photos on what you're looking for.
