Car broke down..

Hey guys, it's been awhile since I have posted here, but I'm back with another problem, well a friends problem anyway.

He owns a 2002 Escape. He was driving down the road today and suddenly lost all power, could only go about 20mph. I noticed that there was actually a hole in the metal piece and a lot of air coming from a part that looked to be part of the intake? I'm not very good with cars so I came here for answers.. This picture isn't of the actual vehicle, and i'm sorry that it's not a very good picture but I think you can all get the idea. We have no idea what part this is! Any help would be appreciated..
