Lincoln tc 95 loud knock
pleasure to be here, take it easy on me as I am new and please forgive me if this post has already been answered. Here goes...
I have a 1995 lincoln town car with the 4.6l engine in it. the car has over 200,000 miles on it and has ran good so far until last week. We took about A 20 mile trip and on the trip we noticed the car was kind of skipping a bit. we got to our destination and went inside for a few hours. When we came outside and got in the car and started it up there was a loud knock and the car would want to stall at idle. I would give it gas and it would hesitate but then it would rev up still knocking (loud enough for me to think something is broken). I am a noob to cars and arent that engine savy. I dont have a bunch of money to throw at a repair shop so I was wondering what you guys think it could be and where should I start to troubleshoot? thanks |

Re: Lincoln tc 95 loud knock
sounds like a rod knock to me. is it a loud, "clanking", rough knock, or does it sound like a tapping sound? did the knocking speed up as the engine reved?

Re: Lincoln tc 95 loud knock
Well, its a loud knock. Very uniform in sound, like a very loud tapping sound. And as you give it gas it gets faster. But like I said it wants to stall at idle and when I give it gas it hesitates bad then it will rev up. The whole time knocking. Where should I start looking for signs of what this could be?

Re: Lincoln tc 95 loud knock
Take a smaller broom stick handle and use it as a listenind device...put it on both sides of your valve covers and you will be able to hear if the noise is in one or both, you can also hold the end of the stick and listen to the engine on the lower end..just be sure you dont knock your ear's off...

I have seen mechanics use the stethascope kind but I didn't know where to get them and frankly would rather spend the money on repair. So use the stick to pin point where the knock is comming from? I will post my findings! Thanks! |
