Leaking Oil Filter Housing Gasket
Can anyone tell me how hard this is to repair? I'm a novice amateur mechanic. Change my own oil, do my own brakes, etc... It's on a 1999 BMW 323i.
Thanks, -GT |

Re: Leaking Oil Filter Housing Gasket
First, model, 325/328/330/ etc. Second is this a spin on filter at the housing and is it leaking oil past the gasket at that point. Third are you sure if it is at the gasket that there is not more than one gasket in place, I have seen leaks that occur when the spin on filter is removed and the rubber gasket remains in place and a new filter is installed. This happened to me on my '96 Dodge Caravan and it was my own fault, the old gasket stuck in place and caused a leak when the new filter ws installed atop the old gasket. Just my initial thought.

Thanks for the reply Bear. That said, I don't really know the answer to your second question, I'm just relaying what the mechanic said.

Re: Leaking Oil Filter Housing Gasket
My question is, is the oil filter on your car a canister type that threads on to the oil filter housing (like a 325)if it is, the filter has a rubber "O" ring at the base that fits up into a cavity on the housing, if the "O" ring comes out when the old filter is removed and sticks in the cavity of the housing, then wen installing a new filter you would have two "O": rings, one atop the other and a poor seal and that can cause a leak.
