E36 has burnt up two fuel pumps???
Ok, I have a 1994 318is that was a project car of sorts. It has been sitting in my garage for 2 years or so with me starting it twice a month. About 6 months ago it quit starting and I tracked it to the fuel pump. I bought a used fuel pump from ebay a month ago and it started up again. It sputtered a bit when reved hard but I figure that was the old gas (whcih had staybil in it). Took it around the block a few times and started in up on and off many times. A week later I tried to start it again and nothing. Took out the second fuel pump and used jumper wires to test and now this pump was bad also. Could this be a coincidence or could there be something electrical that is burning up my pumps. Could it have been the old gas. I have drained the tank and the gas looked and smelled ok.
Should I try one more time or try to fix something electircal first, or could it have been bad gas buring up the pumps. I am testing the pump right correct, jumping neg and positive from battery? Thanks for any advice. |

Re: E36 has burnt up two fuel pumps???
Hello.... My first post on this forum. I'm probably not going to be able to help you much, but I'd guess from your description that the eBay pump probably just failed. That's the chance you take with electrical parts. I looked at my Haynes manual and they don't give any test procedure for the fuel pump. but I'd say that you're doing it correctly. You should make sure of the polarity (plus and minus) of the wires, though. If it's out of the car, you might give it a tap with a broom handle and see if it will run. And I wouldn't run it "dry" for any length of time. Some of the auto parts stores (Pep Boys, Autozone, etc.) will test those things for you. Good luck.

Re: E36 has burnt up two fuel pumps???
Hey, I have a 1994 318IS myself. Got it new and it has 55K miles on it. Need any help with things to make the thing really rock, contact me. Bout done it all to this car!
I think the fuel pump from Ebay just failed as well. Never buy used electrical parts! You're going to have to suck it up & buy some dealed NEW parts to keep it going. Hoses, coolant pipes & belts ran me over $500 for all of them. Yes, they are all formed hoses for every thing. But mine would have lasted 20 years or so! |

Just an update, I think I have narrowed it down to the fuel regulator. I will let you know when I try it.
