2001 Monte Carlo SS skipping gears?

Hello. I am a first time thread poster here. I'm wondering what could be happening with my vehicle. When I acceletare or cruise, the vehicle makes a jerking sort of motion as if it were just catching a gear. It makes a fairly loud bang sound when it does. When I acceletare it may not do so smoothly at times. For example if it's going from first gear to second it feels like it's going from second to first in that when it goes to the following gear the car revs up heavily then BUMPS as it switches to the "third" gear. Any ideas?
