Red face My 4 Runner Sputters then HUGE acceleration

Okay, so my 1991 4Runner sputters... sputters then major acceleration. I don't understand why it would do that. As it sputters I freak (out of course, I'm just a girl) and push in the clutch and it stops. But I also figured out that if I jam on the accelerator once the sputtering stops it lurches forward, snapping my head back, with more power than I think it's ever had before. I've heard it may be the wiring or even the O2 sensor? Does anyone have a clue what would do that or what I could do to fix it?

First would be check your plug gaps.
Another thing to check would be your secondary ignition components, spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor & dist components.

Check your TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) if it is not set right, the ECM (Electronic Control Module, [Computer]) may not be aware of the acceleration until way late. It is a rotational adjustment on your throttle body. you will need a "feeler" gauge set and an electrical meter to check for proper setting.

Re: My 4 Runner Sputters then HUGE acceleration

Thanks for answering my message.
I was also thinking TPS. My question is, can a TPS sensor act intermittenly... meaning sometimes running normalily and sometimes a sputter and surge? Also my truck has new cap wire rotor and plugs, all Toyota Parts.
No lights senors show up on the dash when this happens. I'm hoping it's the TPS... but does anyone know a way to trouble shoot this????
I'm sort of at a loss herel. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
