Lightbulb Re: 1998 Neon Tune Up?

Start with a good tune up: Spark plugs, maybe spark wires, air filter, fuel filter, and add some fuel injector cleaner to the gasoline. Rent a DTC (code) reader if you are doing this yourself & take a look a the results. EGR & TPS problems can cause some of these symptoms, so code reading is needed.

Engine problems WILL cause the transmission to get confused. It sounds like it's going into limp in mode sometimes; Locked into second gear until you stop & restart the motor. The trans needs it's own special code reader to diagnose problems, but get the engine working right first.

Changing the fluid (with ATF+4) & filter in the trans may also help it.

Re: 1998 Neon Tune Up?

Stay away from Bosch plugs and stick with Champions which Chrysler only recomends.Chrysler products run like crap with Bosch plugs. For a fuel injector cleaner,Lucas or Chevron and stay away from the cheap ones like STP and other unknown brands.Yopu don't have to go to the dealer for the ATF +4 transmissionfluid anymore, most parts stores sell it and Carquest is one that does.Get 6 quarts, takes about 5 or 6 quarts.Start with the tune up first and put anti seeze compound on the spark plug threads due to the cylinder head being aluminum if they have to come the next time.
