A red Delorean from the factory?
I was searching the internet the other day for delorean information, and I came across a website for a car musem that had a red painted delorean which they claimed to be one of only 3 to ever be painted from the factory? I don't have the link, but do any of you know if this is for real? As far as I know the only non-stainless D's were the gold ones.

Re: A red Delorean from the factory?
I've seen a few painted ones myself, and I think they looked really badass, but from the sites I read, there were never any painted ones from the factory, and I thought there were only 3 or 4 gold ones ever made....

Re: A red Delorean from the factory?
There where 2 gold cars made from the factory there was suppose to be three and there is but the 3rd one was pieced together from parts and the door was the only thing missing it doesnt exactly match the car . There where never any painted cars.

As I recall the gold ones were for a promotional tie-in or contest for American Express Gold Card (which was new awesome and exclusive in the early '80's).

Re: A red Delorean from the factory?
Well, actually it is correct that no DMC-12 came from the factory painted. However, while I worked for DeLorean at the Bridgewater NJ Tech/Prep Center as a Regional Rep, we heard about (but never saw) several cars being sent to duPont in Wilmington to see if they could come up with a technique to paint the stainless. Some owners wanted something different, but the problem seemed to be that the stainless used on the DeLorean was so good that it was very hard to acid etch so the paint would adhere. I understand several cars were painted red but it never progressed from there. There was also talk of trying anodizing, but I believe they thought it would scratch too easily.
So, yes these cars could be "factory" red painted DeLoreans. |
