Missing when tank gets low

I have a 1996 ram van with v8 enging. When I fill it up it runs fine, but when it gets below half full it starts to miss. It seems to get worse the lower the gas gage goes. It looks like the gage is correct. I just drove it on a 3 hour trip and it didn't run hout of gas after it started missing. My first thougth is that I got some bad gas (water in the gas). What things should I be checking or doing in order to correct this problem?

Re: Missing when tank gets low

Your fuel pump is worn out and is starting to fail.

The fuel in your tank acts like a heat sink for the pump. When your fuel level falls below a half a tank the pump is no longer submerged in the fuel so it starts to heat up. It's during these times that the pump is not putting out has much pressure as it should and your engine is starving for fuel, causing the misfiring.
