timing question '94 1.0
Just finished some head work and I was reinstalling the distributor and the timing belt.
The problem is that none of my manuals ('90 Geo shop man and a Haynes Geo Metro) have sprockets that look like mine. My Camshaft sprocket has 5 spokes with 60A+notch and 80C+notch marks on two of the spokes. My distributor only slips in when it is 180 degrees off... What orientation do I need to have the 60A and/or 80C cam sprocket marks in to reinstall the timing belt? I have my engine shaft sprocket key lined up with the arrow mark.

Re: timing question '94 1.0
There is a "DOT" on the Cam pulley i believe. and a slash near the top of the head to line it up with. On the Crank i think you line it it with the plastic cover on, my memery is bad, but i know the dots and slashes is there, Take more time clean the surface and get a good light.
"always have number one pistin up when timing" Also dont forget to let us know if this solved your problem.

Re: timing question '94 1.0
With the engine sprocket key lined up with the arrow mark, the #1 is in TDC.
I'm talking about the spoke style camshaft sprocket. There is no "dot". Does anyone know what the marks on the camshaft sprocket (ie 60 and 300) mean and what orientation they need to be in?

Does anyone even understand my question???
Has anyone else swapped a head or replaced a head gasket on a '94?

Re: timing question '94 1.0
chembrad,
I've done many complete engine rebuilds on these cars, two of which so far have been 94's. 60A should be verticle/top. The distributor will only fit into the Cam in one direction (as you appear to have discovered) and it will not install 180° out. In addition, there should be a dash around the rim of the cam sprocket facing the passenger side of the car that will align with a mark on the valve cover. (VALVE COVER MUST BE INSTALLED PRIOR TO INSTALLATION OF TIMING BELT) Please let us know if this has been of any help, or if you're still stuck.[edit]I'll take pictures at work today[/edit] -Matt Last edited by 91Caprice9c1; 11-16-2006 at 05:26 PM. |
