Trouble Starting

1999 3.4L V6 Alero GL

About two months ago the dash instrumentation stopped working, which has also seemed to affect the air conditioner which is also not working. This has happened before (usually after a big rain when the car was outside) but usually started working again after a couple of days. This time it has not. More recently, the battery died (which has also happened before) due to the battery light inside the car not going off after the car was turned off. A simple unhooking of the battery and problem solved... but not this time. To top it all off, the car will start and then die. This also has happened before, but after a few minutes of trying to start it, it would start. Not this time. The fuel pump seems to be working because when I turn the key and don't start it, the lines pressurize. At this point, I am stumped. I have checked all the fuses and all of them are in good condition. I would consider myself a shade tree mechanic and would really like to pick the brains of the people who frequent this forum. I will provide more information as needed. Thanks!

Welcome to AF.

Two things off the top of my head. You either have a problem with the main fuse box in the engine compartment and related wiring or a bad ignition switch since you are missing the IP and HVAC. Also, the bad switch could be affecting the Passlock system.

Re: Trouble Starting

Well, it seems as though everything is working fine now. I didn't do anything. I just hooked it up to a code computer and it decided to start out of the blue. I don't know what the heck is wrong with this car, but it seems fine for now. If you have any other ideas, let me know. Thanks.

Thats typical for an Alero. About all I can recommend is keep an eye on it because the problem(s) may come back. Also, check the battery posts and the positive and negative cables (grounding). Some Aleros get intermittent problems with the engine compartment fuse box. Good luck!
