Re: ball bearing shaft play

It shouldn't have any shaft play...it could operate with just a very minimal amount of wiggle, but it's probably not going to last very long.

Are the fins on the turbine chipped or worn at all? Is there any oil residue on the insides of the turbo (I mean a very very noticeable amount)?

The only bad thing with a BB turbo is that if the seals are fuxored then you can't have the center section rebuilt. You'll have to end up ordering a new one. Hopefully you didn't pay too much.

Re: ball bearing shaft play

If it's brand new maybe it just needs to be broken in.
If it's really a faulty turbo, then you should have some sort of warranty on it. Take it to a shop that deals with performance turbos and see if they'll look at it.
Or install it and see how it goes. If it's not touching the walls it'll be fine.

You can only dream that it will have zero shaft play. The turbo's we get straight from IHI still have minimal shaftplay. When you get oil into the turbo, spin it a bit to get the oil curculating through. You could just take whatever motor oil your planning on using in your car, plug one side of the turbo (outlit) and fill the inlet with oil and spin the turbing by hand untill you fill it up, check and see now if there is shaft play. Most of the turbo's i rebuild have shaft play, but then when i add the oil in it the shaft play disapears. Good luck.

Re: ball bearing shaft play

I really meant to say ideally....but yah, it won't ever not wiggle, but i've not seen any turbos that are brand new wiggle enough to make me think something is wrong.

Re: ball bearing shaft play

How do i test for shaftplay? I wanna measure it, I have feller gauges and a caliper. Im guessing the caliper is useless but one of the garrett dealers said to use feller gauges. How would i go about doing that?

Thanks
Tom

Re: ball bearing shaft play

id probably just stick my feelers on the inside wall between the wheel and see how much gap there is, and then do the same for the turbine side..

Re: ball bearing shaft play

Its called clearance. If it had zero, then the shaft woudl lock up once any heat was applied.

If there isn't any contact with the sides, then you are prolly just fine.
