Transmission filter, external, inline
Many of us know that our transmissions are an item to stay on top of preventative maintenence with.
I bought a couple of inline filters. ATP # JX-150. I bought this item from www.rockauto.com I highly recommend this site for parts....they carry a lot of motorcraft parts. This is for the 5/16" lines that go from the transmission to the cooler that is part of the radiator assembly. The filter contains a magnet to catch metal items, and a paper filter to catch particles down to 25 microns. My plan is to install this filter in the line between the cooler and the transmission, and change it at each oil change. The Rockauto website also states that this filter has a pressure bypass valve to permit fluid flow once the media becomes clogged. The instructions state that the filter should be installed in the line that is going from the cooler(s) back into the transmission. This is overkill according to the FORD maintenence instructions as they do not even list replacement of the internal filter within the first 100K miles. But I have read some posts from a few of you out there...who...like me....are giving our trannys a little extra TLC. I have a '96 windstar with the 3.8L engine 146K miles. My transmission calls for MERCON fluid.....And I use Mobil 1 Mercon ATF. From the same website, I bought a filter for my power steering.....It was a Cardone part.....and was a bit more expensive than the filter that I bought for the tranny. The filter looks just like the ATP....but is for a 3/8" line. So I may look for the ATP filter for the 3/8" line next time to save a few bucks....(I know that they make one). I buy my WIX oil filters from them as well. And, they carry the Motorcraft PCV valve.....other brands can permit too much flow.....which results in excess oil in the intake. |
