Old Lincolns..72 Mark IV
Hello everyone, im new here, and counting on you for help.
I have a 72 Mark IV that was my grandmother's. My dad has neglected it for the past 10 years and it has been sitting in his driveway. Im now trying to restore it as a "fun" daily driver. It needs the Carb rebuilt or a new one. Also the gas tank has rusted, and i wanted to replace it with a new polymer tank, so there is no chance of rust. And lastly it needs a vinyl top that was specific to the Cartier edition, however, that fabric has been discontinued. If any of you can reccomend websites, or ideas on my restoration please feel free to post them here, or email me at jase386@aol.com. |

I am glad to see someone else in this forum has one of these I thought I was the only one.
I like the '72, as it was the last year for the non 5 mph front bumper, si its much nicer than the newer ones. It is virtually identical to the Mk v, in production through 1979. The carb you have is an Autolite (Motorcraft) 4300 4 bbl. Its an excellent carb and easy to rebuild (as carbs go) on your own. Rebuilt ones should be easy to find. for the gas tank....look around for a gas tank shop that can rebuild yours. I do not know of any plastic tanks for this model, but unless yours is in BIG holes, it can be boiled out cleaned up and 'dipped' to its given a plastic coating inside and out. My last tank cost me about $200 for this repair. (I had to remove and reinstall it though) The vinyl roof material is difficult to find in exactly the same colour but most auto trim shops can get the same colour in a similar texture, which should be close enough. IMHO these cars look better without a vinyl roof at all. (I peeled the roof off my MkV and it looks great.) The vinyl was an option for '72. You could just peel it off and paint the roof to match. You will probably find rust under the old vinly that needs fixing anyways. How about some pics? |

i have some pics, ill have to send them when i get home, im at work now reading this. Its not as much of a bear as the previous post may have made it sound. I say daily driver, but it would be more of an occaisional driver, and maybe some local shows, nothing big time. nothing i cant afford to drive it to, i dont think cars should be on trailers. Just needs the carb work and paint and a top.

I have wondered about that too. Never worked out how. I suspect its some sort of cult secret for the folks who post in the Off Topic section. If you find out, let me know. :-)
