Spark Plug Questions

I pulled one off and the terminal tears out of the boot and stays on the plug. So I gently remove the rest, twisting the rubber boot as I pull, every damn terminal on all 6 boots rips off. Is there any reason for this? They were bosch plugs. that ripped so i got Borg N Wagner Wires that were 40 Bucks the good ones, and i put them on but im afraid when i wanna change the plugs they are gonna rip off any reason? I have the wires kinda bunched up together with a zip tie. Could that be it?

Re: Spark Plug Questions

the wires came apart from thier age...they should be fine. The zip ties though are not fine..the wires should be isolated from each other to help prevent crossfiring and arcing.. go to the dealership or the salvage yard and get the original wire holders...
There is also a tool called a sparkplug wire puller...it allows you to grab the boot and not the wire.

Re: Spark Plug Questions

Those new plug wires came with insulator grease that you needed to put into the end of both the coil boot and plug boot before you put them on. If you negect to do this it allows moisture to get into the coil boot and rust will cause it to misfire.

Re: Spark Plug Questions

one other thing is that the grease they supplied make it alot easier to put them on and get them off if you need to without breaking the wire loose. Grip the boot and turn before pulling. After it turns freely then pull while turning. It's much easier and you won't break it. Oh yeah use the grease.

Re: Spark Plug Questions

just to let you know I've been working on 3.1 and 2.8 engines for quit a few years and the connectors always just seem to come off it doesn't matter how old or new they are or how much grease you put on them they just tear apart it is a fact of life there is no tool available to stop this. The best you can do if you don't want to replace the wires every time is to put them back together by pushing the wire through the boot and using a pliers or needlenose to put the connector back on the wire. I've noticed it doesn't happen to all the wires all the time, it is just a fact of life they will come apart.

Re: Spark Plug Questions

I didn't say that the grease is a bad thing, it isn't, it is good to put grease on the boots it does seal them from moisture, but that will not stop them from coming apart.
