how long will a svx engine last..?
i found a '92 svx for $4900 (wow) but it had 97K on it! that's a lot, so i was wondering if it's a good thing to get it or keep on looking. i know some engines last a long time, but i'm not sure about this one. haven't test driven it yet, it's about 24 miles from where i live.. so i was wondering if someone can tell me if it's worth a look at before i drag my lazy self up there.. thanks for looking at this, bye!

Post your question here
www.subaru-svx.net and take a look around.
I've got 143K on my '92, but just lost a head gasket. You can probably expect 160-175K out of one if it's been maintained properly. |

Re: how long will a svx engine last..?
97k is nothing, on average most cars should last up to 200k without breaking (normal wear and tear items will), being maintained consistantently. My friend bought his vovlo with 313,000 and it runs great.

Re: how long will a svx engine last..?
Most sites say the svx engine is amazingly well built and very strong...it has a lot of forged internals and overall it's pretty damn good. A lot of people get well over 150 and some over 200k with the usual maintenance.
It's a non-interference type engine so if the timing belt breaks the valves and pistons can't touch...it will however leave you stranded. Some gaskets will leak on the ones with higher mileages and the water pump is a known weak spot (expect to change it when you change the timing belt, if not sooner). The trans is what you need to worry about, esp if it's an awd svx. If the previous owner installed an aftermarket trans cooler and filter it will prolong its life, but it still will probably fail before the engine does. Wheel bearings are a known issue too, but they are supposedly the same as the ones in the STI, so many people believe it's an issue of people installing them incorrectly/ being installed from the factory incorrectly. EDIT: holy shit this thread is old...SVX forum is dead! lol

I like the Suabru concept though it looks too much like the RX-8 from the side. They should just make it a two door.
