Alright I come to ask for advise again, I took the car to a shop and they said it was the timing chain and it would be 900.00 so I took your advise and was going to tow the car to another shop and I called the first shop at 8am and said I wanted to tow my car home and wait until I had the money to get it fixed, He said ok "let me put the car back together again and he would call back" so around 11am he called and said he knew he didnt have the autherization to fix it however he already fixed it and he lowered the price to 675.00, I am really pissed I said I would work with him and I gave him 200.00 and he is holding to car until I pay the rest, I know this was done without my permission now what can I do? I dont want to call the BBB until I get my car back so he doesnt do anything to it. Any ideas to help me it would be great, Once again I am a single mom who is disabled and I know I was totally ripped off, Thanks everyone for the help! Stormmy

They had no right to fix it without your permission. But look at it from his perspective. You told him you were going to tow it home until you had the money to fix it. He probably thought he was doing you a favor by throwing in the timing set while it was apart. If he had put it back together, then they would have almost certainly charged you for disassembly and reassembly (and would have had every right to). That would have been several hundred dollars, then if you had it done somewhere else, would have been charged again. The $675 sounds more reasonable than the $900 they said before.
What I would do is this: Call a few shops in the area and ask them what they would charge for the timing chain set. Go back to the shop that did the repair and ask to see the parts they replaced. By law (in Iowa, anyway, you will need to check into this for your area), we are required to save parts until the customer picks up the car. No parts to show them means we can't legally make them pay. If they show you the parts, then tell them that you will pay the average of what the other shops charge. If they don't have the parts, then you may have no legal obligation to pay. The parts should look something like this:
