I have a 1988 Camaro with a 2.8/ 3.1/3.460* engine with a auto, and I want to get rid of the fuel injection and run carb and points distributor, and I wanting to build it for bracket car to drag race. I am looking to run some where in the 14’s or 12’s. My problems is that no parts houses or dealers in my area carries any factor parts or any performance parts, they all tell me that I need a list of parts numbers with that parts. I need parts numbers form the top down and front to back ( Cam solid lift mid and upper torque and a rough idle), Timing chain and gear, value springs (good strong ones) retainers, lifters push rods, rocker arms, stock manifold, distributor (points type) complete gasket set for 2.8/ 3.1/ 3.4 etc.
COULD SOMEONE PLEASE GIVE ME SOME HELP

For starters, which motor do you have? 2.8/3.1/3.4 are all different displacement values. Secondly, not too many people spend that type of money to beef up an old 6. Might as well spend it on a crate V8.
Thirdly, do what most other people do, search the internet. No one knows what type of parts or brands you are looking for, for part numbers.

Edelbrock supplies a "4-bbl" intake (has an adapter to replace the 2-Jet 2-bbl). Part nos. are 3785 and 3787. Either a large 2-bbl., or small 4-bbl. would be okay. Holley supplies a 390 CFM 4-bbl. for these smaller engines.

Comp will grind you what ever cam you want for this little "mini-beast". For a racer, something in the 250-260 (@.050) range for intake duration will suffice.

Iron or aluminum heads? Pistons are different for each, so a decision must be made before buying the parts. Aluminum heads have a slight advantage on these engines, but the iron can be modified to make good power. Installing the aluminum heads in a car formerly equipped with iron can make for some "adventure".

Cloyes supplies a "true roller' timing set, as well.

The non-computer distributor for the '80 2.8 (in Citation, Phoenix, etc.) will eliminate the last of the ECM stuff. I believe MSD makes one for racing. A call to them would be in order.

12s may be a TALL order for the little 6. I've seen an S-15 in the 13s, though.

You will get more responses like the "just use a V8" above. And it's true, your performance goals would be much more easily attained by using a 350. But don't let that "sway" you if you really WANT the V6. And a "crater"? Only if you want lack-luster performance and a "cookie cutter" engine. A GOOD shop will build you a 350 that would suck the lights right out of the crater-equipped car. (had to get a "plug" in for custom shops...)

Just a warning... I hope you have a big budget, and are ready for a lot of breakdowns. I built an 85 2.8 base camaro. The little motors just kinda tear themselves apart with big hp. There are lots of parts available, check jegs, summit, and P.A.W. Most parts will be expensive because they are custom or special order. Not to discourage you because there is something fun in beating the pants off some 350 powered car with a 2.8. But, you will get a more reliable, consistant, longer lasting engine with a v8,and parts are much cheaper and more readily available.
