Yesterday on my way to work my 04 Sunfire died on me. It would turn over, but not fire up. Luckily it quit right in front of a auto repair shop. They ruled out the fuel pump being bad, but he did say that the bottom radiator hose was trying to collapse, but yet the hose was in new condition? any thoughts on what could be doing this and causing it not to start? thanks in advance

A badly plugged up fuel filter can kill a fuel pump and I have seen this.Make sure a Delphi pump is installed instead an Airtex,Bosch or Carter fuel pump. The aftermarket fuel pumps are junk and do not last.Delphi pumps hold up for a long time and it has been proven.

If you're asking because you're curious or are going to do the remainder of the diagnosis on your own, read on. If you're asking because a "pro" can't figure out a crank-no-start on a simple and common vehicle like ours, have it towed somewhere else immediately!

It sounds like they checked for fuel, and it must have it or they couldn't have ruled out the pump. But do make sure they checked for either injector pulse or spraying intake cleaner in the T/B (engine will run off intake cleaner if it has spark and compression)... pressure alone isn't enough.

That leaves spark as the problem (probably, haven't seen a timing chain break on an ecotec yet... how many miles on it?). I've seen several ignition modules and coil packs go bad on these, but it's not usually a sudden die, they usually run bad but keep running. That would make me think the CKP sensor went out.

The mechanic called me at work and said it was the fuel pump. I guess the pump would run for a minute or two and then stop. I did talk to another mechanic since her first said it was ok and he did say they can get stressed from a plugged fuel filter or other reasons and then fail. I had them replace the fuel pump and it drove fine.. I hope that this took care of my problem... thanks for the replys...
