ARGH! Coolant Pipe came loose!

I have a 98 Lumina 3.1.

Theres a coolant pipe that runs into the plenum/manifold underneath the EGR (not the one with a bleeder valve that runs across the front part of the engine). This fella decided to pop out somehow on the highway. My question is, how is the pipe secured? Theres no screws it appears it just slides in. What kind of adhesive would I use to make sure it doesn't pop out again? My car was also over heated for about 3 miles. Any chance of serious damage?

It has a bracket on the pipe that is secured with a nut that comes of a stud on the rear head under the bracket for the fuel lines.

What airjer said unless you are talking about the pipe that runs underneath the plenum that loops into the pipe that runs across the front of the engine. I think it's called the water pump bypass. It is just a press fit and I think the top of the plenum keeps it from coming out. I doubt you were talking about this one though.

If you overheated the vehicle via loss of coolant and ran it any amount of time there's always a change for damage.

Manic you are correct. Its a press fit. Dont know why it came out, was thinking of using some sort of sealant to keep it in.

Any ideas on what to look for in terms of overheating damage? Performance seems ok, just worried the press fit will come out again and mess up whatever isn't already messed up due to running hot for a mile or two. (estimated, may be less)

If its that pipe than are you sure the pipe hasn't rotted to the point that there is no longer enough pipe left to hold it in place (since it is press fit into the LIM). You may want to consider replacing the LIM with a used one!

Is it the pipe that Airjer mentioned (heater pipe) or the pipe that runs under the upper intake manifold (water pump bypass)? I'm not clear which one it is. I figured it was the heater pipe and like Airjer mentioned it should've been secured with a bolt on the back of the engine. If it's the other pipe (bypass) then also like Airjer said it probably corroded and blew out the seal instead of actually popping out because I think the upper intake locks it in. I've never heard of the bypass pipe coming out. Actually I think both pipes have an O-ring seal and probably it blew out.

Your engine is probably OK if it runs good. You'll have to keep an eye out for it using coolant or burning oil. You would want to change the oil after running hot.

It was the water pump bypass. Dealer got me a new tube and o ring for $12 after tax. The old one does look corroded and there was no seal on it so airjers' scenario was most likely what happened.

Oh OK it was that one. So you had to take the upper intake off? Fun fun. Yeah probably it just corroded up and blew the O-ring instead of actually coming out. If you clean the hole out good and put a new pipe and seal in it should seal up.

I have no idea what pipe we are talking about anymore? lol! But it sounds like you got what you need to get it fixed!!

No way, I didnt take the upper off.

I Found out I could get to it by moving the air box, egr hose and other coolant hoses out of the way. Cut my arm up in the process but saved myself valuable time using a flex bit. Ive taken the upper off twice before and have way to much ADD to do it with the limited time I have hahaha. Everythings A-ok for now, although the area all the coolant spilled onto looks damn nasty!

The old pipe came off because the screw was not on there to hold it in.

Just gotta find the plastic hoses [which are all ancient old] to replace all the plastic ones I broke by touch.

Now I think you're talking about the heater outlet pipe lol. I'm with airjer it sounds like you got it fixed. If the plastic vaccum hoses are the ones I think you are talking about that is originally one assembly and is supposed to be repalced as one piece. I had to replace mine because the pcv valve hose was froze on and broke.
