Transmission shift lever linkage

My Montana is immobile. On back up today, the shift lever went slack. I tried to move it to an operable drive setting, but it went into "park", and I have not been able to move it since. Obviously something has become disconnected, but I don't have a diagram of the linkage. Is this a common problem?

I don't know how simple it will be, but the linkage is under the vacuum booster back near the firewall. You really need to remove the air intake pipe and MAF sensor to get your hands down in there to see it. You can also remove the driver's wheel and the plastic skirting in the wheel housing to get a grip and a view on the point of connection of the linkage to the tranny.

There is one nut that holds the end of the linkage down to the top of the tranny lever and two points where the switch assembly is screwed down beneath the linkage. Its all pretty simple, and not too hard to reach once you get that air intake stuff out of your way.

I am having the same problem. Can you tell me what you ended up doing to fix this? The next post said that it was easy enough to get to the linkage after taking out the air intake hose, etc. Did you find out why it came off? I don't see any screws that bolt it down to the transmission lever. Did you need to replace the cable?

Any details would be appreciated.
