Check the maintenance history. Make sure the transmission fluid and coolant have been changed regularly, and the timing belt. Trans fluid and coolant ever 30k miles, and timing belt every 60k. I have a customer that has an '01 Elantra. He delivers newspapers with it. With proper maintenance, he is about to hit 250k miles on it within the next couple weeks, and still on original engine and transmission, even with the constant stopping and starting required for his job.

Also keep an eye on the radiator, as mine cracked and I lost a lot of fluid.
