Hey, i am a new member of this website, and i just got my first car. It's a '97 Honda Prelude (manual). Everything is stock but the speakers and stereo that I put in in about August. I am looking for some engine upgrades, exhaust, cold-air intake, etc. to add some needed Horse Power. Now, cars are kinda new to me soo i don't really understand everything that you might say, but my car comes standard with i think 189 HP, and i wanted to know some cheap upgrades, (i am a highschool student working at chili's, but my parents can pay for most of the stuff) i want to make it cheap and effective. If you would please help me =D

first of all the 189hp is at 5,000 rpms so that means your hp is significantly less and if you have vtech that wont kick in until you reach a certain rpms so with that in mind you can start anywhere first i would say is a legal cold air intake one that has a bar serial number like k&n and aem then put iridium spark plugs in and maybe an exhaust system not a tip a full exhaust system then if you want more power go with some msd ignition parts blaster coil and wires control box and basically an msd ignition system

haha dont waste your money on ignition systems. jesus so many rice boys here dont know what they are talking about. your stock ignition system will be just fine for upwards of 500 hp. now i hate the fact that your a spoiled little rich kid but at least i can steer you away from the idiots. for basic bolt ons, get a cold air intake, and a full exhaust system. then make sure your ignition system is in good shape, but theres no reason to use any aftermarket parts at all. some STOCK OEM honda spark plug wires, and NGK platinum spark plugs are all you need. for your level of car knowledge, keep it like that and learn more about cars before you make dumb purchases. if you want though, you can get some headers but if you decide to turbo your car later, the headers will not fit on a turbo car. after that, just keep up on maintanence, keep the brakes and suspension in good shape, and please dont buy any body kits or big ugly spoilers.

hey that little show is pretty cool and there is nothing wrong with upping the ignition system plus i aint no rice boy either ive seen considerable horse power gains from it and torque all through the rpms and it would gain more horsepower than a cold air intake anyday ignition upgrades are not made for no reason
here this link would explain myself better

JDM WINGS AT THE BACK IS COOL..YOU CAN GAIN 10 HP....THAT MEANS 189 + 10 = 199 HP

so you use the website advertising the product to help convince me to buy it? what are you working for MSD or something? stock ignition systems on any car made in the last 15 or 20 years can handle anything your car can do with pump gas. show me proof not ads. and stop telling all these kids to buy shit they dont need.

its common sense or should i say another way to gain a substantial amount of horsepower and no i dont work for msd i just favor it and it was a suggestion not telling him to buy just suggesting its alot better then a cold air intake

I hope you are being sarcastic... there are kids that would believe it(just look at the street) :nono:
I'd second what slide said, the basic starters are always intake and exhaust for better air flow for the engine. I don't think ignition systems mods will have as a significant effect as the intake/exhaust does if everything is left as stock... engine management is another area for more technical drivers..

lol thanks, i will keep in mind all the great ideas that you have led me to, i will make sure to CHOOSE WISELY, hahaha. i know enough to think if something is stupid or not and i can surely ask more questions later, but i will prolly start with a cold air intake and maybe a new ehaust.

after that, suspension and tires are your best friends. theres absolutely no benefit to upgrading your ignition system before you hit 30 psi on a turbo motor. anyone who tells you different is an idiot.

well i was not planning on spending soo much on my little car, i might just save some of the big upgrades for a new car that i can save up for(one that is actually fast)

good idea. i suggest the #1 mod you should do is go to your local road course and sign up for some track lessons. it helps a ton in both racing and every day car control. i bet you can shave more tenths off your time by learning how to drive than by putting on intakes.

short throw shifter is effective easy and cheap and simple things like good tires are cool. Nothing like dumping a clutch @ 5500 in vtec and have the car stick, u can get out of the hole with a WRX!!!!!

unless the WRX is dumping at redline. my buddies 2002 wrx with just an intake and cat-back exhaust was getting the jump on other wrx, sti, and evos with bigger turbos and much more hp because he abused his car. launching at redline, he went thru 3 brand new transmissions before 100k. but its funny seeing an almost stock wrx beat an evo that had more mods. or an s2k, or a TT rx-7, or a TT supra, or a 300whp STi. its funny until his transmission took a dump and got stuck in 4th gear.
