Ok I bought a 95 Cavalier and I was driving it and the check engine light came on. auto trans 2.2L btw.
When I drive it around town it drives fine, but if I drive it say at 60mph for a while then when I come to a stop it just quits. I can put it in park and it will start like normal. As soon as I put it in gear it dies. even if I give it a little gas and put it in gear it just dies there is nothing I can do to stop it. As long as its not in gear it runs normal and I can rev it or do what ever, I just can't put it in drive. If I wait about 45 seconds it will start up and I can put it in drive and its just like normal.
I took it to Autozone to get the code read. Well there obd2 machine will connect to the port but it will not read the codes. The port is obd2 not obd1. The fuses are fine and the port is getting power. I tried a couple more places to make sure it was not just there machine. still no luck.
I checked to make sure there are no corroded wires or broke wires etc.
What should I do next? I have about gave up:crying:

brandonppr (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/member.php?u=551649).... I'm having the same Issue with my Snapon Scanner. My 95 has a ODBII connector but when I use my scanner I get mis communication erros. Were u able to pull ur codes?

Here is where I am at so far. I have been told that it has an obd1 computer and an obd2 connector. So an obd2 scanner won't work because its not an obd2 conputer and an obd1 scanner won't work because it doesn't have an place to hook it up.
The solution I am about to try is to rent autozones obd1 scantool and jumper it to the obd2 connector. The only alternative is to get an obd1 to obd2 adapter for the obd1 scantool and they are not cheap.
Here is how to do it the cheap way. I have not tried it yet, but I am going to soon.

Try an OBD1 reader. A few 95's I used my OBD2 on does not work because they are the OBD1

You need a bidirectional scanner. Many 1994 & 1995 GMs used a hybrid PCM that used new architecture but was not completely OBD-II compliant in communications:
