Rear Hard Brake Lines - Size?

Anyone know the diameter of the rear steel brakelines out of the drum? It is a 91 HB. Mine are rusted and squirting! Figured I would ask here first before I question the geniuses at autozone.

ok... i am guessing they are 3/16".
Anyone know what type of flare? "Double" or "Bubble"?
Once again i am guessing, and hoping double.

If mine still had drums I would go check for you, but I don't have a clue...can't even recall a steel line coming out of the drum. Got any local junk yards that might have it? Probably be easier to do it that way rather than making your own.

Yep, 3/16" metric (kind of an oxymoron) is the correct size. I put a new brake line on the rear and a new caliper in the front last night.

One funny thing though, I got 2 brake line sticks at autozone, and one at murray's. (Autozone didn't have a 6" like I thought I needed. Ended up using the 12" anyways). The flare nut size is different between the stores. And of course I bought the wrong line wrench for the brake line I used! Murray's lines use a 11mm wrench, and Autozone a 10mm.

you don't need a flare nut wrench to tighten the lines, only to remove them after they've been installed.... brake lines tend to "work harden" after having been used for years, from vibration and such, and they "stick" in the threads, hence the reason for a wrench that makes as much contact on the "nut" as possible.

if you ever find yourself short the flare wrench that you need, find a cheap wrench at a parts store and cut a section out of it w/ a hacksaw that will just fit over your line, it will work fine, and be cheaper than a "special tool" which most parts stores consider a flare wrench to be... another alternative is to use a craftsman wrench, b/c after you're done, you can take it back, and they'll replace it w/ a new uncut one, and won't ask any questions about how it got "broken"

In addition to what Dr0pZ0n3 said, if you are in a pinch and dont want to cut a wrench, but have some rust buster, use that. I didn't have a line wrench and the nut was really, really rusty. I sprayed the nut with "Power Lube" rust eater, let it sit for a while, and sprayed it again. That stuff works great! The nut came out fairly easy with a good wack to the wrench to break it loose.

And oh yeah, you can always cut the old line, and use the box end of your wrench.

Ummm...why not just put a regular open end wrench on it and pop it...not just apply constant pressure on it, just one good pop and it will usually come right off. Ofcourse a pair of Vise-grips works well too if you get a good grab on it. Just don't ever put constant pressure on it. I don't own any line wrenchs, and don't ever really plan to get any(not any time soon atleast) I just haven't found a reason to spend the money on a special tool that I don't absolutely HAVE to have.

Ahhh... what a great life lesson. My Dad taught me this long long ago... If the nut/bolt knows you are coming it will be there to stay. If you suprise the hell out of it, it's out of there!

Yeah, all those things work, but I still like the looks I get when I go back to sears to replace a wrench that I cut the end out of w/ a hacksaw... man, it's so obvious when you do it too... and they aren't allowed to refuse the return... lmao
