Would this be difficult to do on my own? I was quoted $600 at a shop because of the "seven hours" of labour thats involved. This seemed a bit odd considering it's just the valve cover. Any feed back would be great

You sure about it being the valve cover gasket they were quoting you for and not the head gasket?

I believe you mean camshaft housing gasket and yeah for a shop, that sounds about right. you have to tear the whole side of the motor off to get the housings off and replace the gasket around them. sometimes it sucks having the 2.4. which while replace the gasket you might as well do some preventive stuff like the timing chain since the timing chain has to come off anyway, the tensioner and shoe and since the motor is opened that far the water pump. I mean it would suck to tear it down that much and then put it back together and the water pump go out then you have to pay to have tore apart agin but then most shops will charge you the full price of tearing it down even though it already is. you'll find it much much cheaper to do it yourself maybe with a buddy. good luck to you.
