99 GTP - BTSI issue and P1887 - possibly related?

Hi everyone,
I am a new owner of a 99 GTP, and am very happy so far. Unfortunately the first day I got this car, the check engine light comes on and the key has issues coming out of the ignition off and on. I had Autozone run a scan and it came up with P1887. I did find out from another thread that this is:

"The torque convertor clutch engages and disengages at speeds above 45 mph to improve driveability and fuel economy. When the P1887 DTC sets it inhibits TCC operation, disables shift adapts and may even inhibit 4th gear (OD). In your case there is a TCC release circuit malfunction meaning the TCC is not releasing properly. It could be a control problem related to the PCM module, wiring or a problem with the TCC solenoid at the valve body. Any tranny shop or GM dealer can run further diagnostics with a trans capable scan tool.

If a part like the TCC solenoid is found bad then replacing it is not typically DIY. The TCC solenoid is located under the transmission side cover (left side) and requires major disassembly to replace." - thanks to BNaylor

I have also been researching the common BTSI issue, it seems very likely that these two issues are related. Would anybody have any input on this theory? It is much appreciated, as the dealer is suppose to fix this for me, but they are unaware I had the car scanned.

Thanks to everyone in advance.

Possible the BTSI problem is related to the P1887 DTC (TCC Release Switch Circuit Malfunction) but you never know for sure without further diagnostics. Common point(s) could be the brake switch circuits which is used for the TCC release circuits.

What are the specifics of your problem?

Did you notice your quote from above? Lol, thanks for the response. The specifics of my problem is really nothing noticeable when driving. About half the time now when I shut the car off and go to pull my key out, its stuck. I usually wait about 30-60 seconds and then it comes right out.

The issue with the SES light has no noticeable affect on the driving, I think it drives great. I did have it scanned at Autozone and got the P1887 code. I believe these two issues are related because they both starting happening the same afternoon.

Hope that gives you a better idea of what is happening, please let me know if I can explain anything else.

Thanks again.

When I get a chance this weekend I'll do some research to see the relationship of BTSI with TCC operation. The TCC release problem could be a fluke if you have no other driveability issues. Disconnect the battery negative cable for a few hours or overnight and see what it does or if it clears. Be sure to have the radio Theftlock code, if active before disconnecting the battery. Also, take a test a test drive to where you see the torque convertor locking at speeds above 45 mph. Then tap on the brake pedal to see if the convertor disengages. You must be in 4th overdrive.

I am leaning towards the TCC not affecting anything at this point as well. I have been driving on the interstate, and the rpm's will drop down to 2k or a tad less at 70mph on cruise. This is where my Buick also held 70 in overdrive. I will go out today and give it another shot to be sure with the brake test.

Thank you.

Well I got my car back from the shop last night, and thankfully the work was all covered under warranty. For the P1887 code, they supposedly replaced a wire at the TCC Pressure Switch, this sounds right I guess. For the BTSI issue, they supposedly replaced a Shift Lock Solenoid, which sounds correct based on others solutions, although I have only heard of the whole shifter assembly being replaced.

Well it all seems to run great this far, although I have one last question if I may.

For anyone with around a 99 GTP, would you mind looking at your dash the next time you start your car, and see if the Service Engine Soon light lights up and shuts off when you start your car?

Sorry, I am always paranoid that they cut corners and did something to the light to make it go away.

Once again, thanks to everybody for the input.
