Hi Guys, I am doing a major check on my Montero 96, the mechanic did a complete computer diagnostic, and then replaced:
ECU (it was almost fubar)
TPS Sensor
and trying to fix the idle speed control motor.

Now is pending an issue with the transmission, months ago the light with D (drive) in the panel get dead, the other ones are fine PRN21.
The mechanic says that the the diagnostic display a code refered to a speed sensor that is not working correctly
and is the same that make the light of the "D" malfunction.
The lights with the two wheels that indicate 2WD are dead two, the upper ones are fine.

I´m trying to get info about it with no luck.

I have to say that all the problems seem to come from a
not reliable work made on the alternator, that damaged the ECU, TPS and the
idle motor.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Guys, I am doing a major check on my Montero 96, the mechanic did a complete computer diagnostic, and then replaced: ECU (it was almost fubar)

Is it the SR model w/ the 3.5L engine or the LS model with the 3.0L engine?

How was it "almost fubar"? How could he tell it it was damaged? Were the capacitor's leaking (most common problem) or was the board/components burnt? It's not uncommon for them to leak but requires physical removal of the ECU from the vehicle & partial disassembly to discover this unless they are completely bad which it doesn't sound like this was the case since it sounds like you drove your montero there to be serviced.

trying to fix the idle speed control motor.
The idle speed control motor usually just needs to be cleaned of dirt buildup. On occassion it does go bad and if it does it can in even more rare circumstances also take out the ECU but then you're engine usually won't start if the ECU goes bad (reason I'm asking my question above).

Now is pending an issue with the transmission, months ago the light with D (drive) in the panel get dead, the other ones are fine PRN21.
Was it just a bad light bulb? Did you replace it with a good bulb? Did it die again? I don't believe the speed sensor affects this light but I can ask more knowledgeable owners if this is the case for you. There are other Mitsubishi Forums that have more specific details & knowledgeable members who know about the various Mitsu 4x4's that can answer this.

See my comments above.

Burnt out bulbs?

Hopefully the burnt bulbs are just that and not something else.

The speed sensor is located on the transfer case. Your mechanic should be able to find this or have the reference diagrams to show this. If not, I suggest a different mechanic that's more knowledgeable. Otherwise, you'll spend alot of time and money on swapping parts from on assumptions versus troubleshooting analysis based on credible sources (Factory Service Manual's, current mechanic service manuals from various reputable sources, etc.).
